Do You Need a Medical Marijuana Card in Texas?

The short answer

Texas’s medical cannabis process uses a prescription entered by a qualified physician into CURT. DPS says patients do not register themselves or pay a state patient-registration fee. A commercial “medical marijuana card” offer is not the state access process. Check questions 5–6 of the patient FAQ.

Follow the prescription, not a marketing label

  1. Find a participating physician through the official search.
  2. Discuss residency, the qualifying condition and the physician’s clinical assessment.
  3. If prescribed, confirm that the physician entered the prescription in CURT.
  4. Ask the dispensing organization what identification and arrangements it requires.

The state registry contains private patient information. TCL does not have access to it or issue cards, prescriptions or certificates.

What might you pay for?

No state registration fee does not mean appointments or medication are free. Ask the provider what the quote includes, whether follow-up appointments cost extra, and whether products are billed separately. TCL has not established a current statewide price range.

What if you have an out-of-state card?

Do not assume another state’s card or prescription provides Texas authorization. DPS’s patient FAQ describes the Texas physician/CURT process and permanent-residency requirement. Contact the program or a qualified professional about your circumstances; a commercial service’s promise does not change state rules.

Check eligibility and the dispensing source

Review qualifying conditions and the full medical guide. A hemp registration belongs to a different licensing system, even when a business uses medical-sounding branding. See the dispensary distinction.
