Texas Medical Cannabis Qualifying Conditions & Eligibility

The short answer

A qualifying diagnosis is one part of medical cannabis eligibility in Texas; a qualified physician must also assess the patient. Check the current DPS patient FAQ and HB 46 rather than an older commercial “medical card” checklist.

On this page 4 sections

Conditions named in the current DPS guidance

The patient FAQ includes epilepsy; seizure disorders; multiple sclerosis; spasticity; ALS; autism; cancer; an incurable neurodegenerative disease; PTSD; a condition causing chronic pain; traumatic brain injury; Crohn’s disease or other inflammatory bowel disease; and terminal illness or hospice/palliative-care circumstances. Read DPS’s complete patient guidance.

HB 46 also retains a qualifying research-program provision. The legal wording matters when a diagnosis or circumstance is uncertain. Read §15 of HB 46 rather than treating a summary as a clinician’s eligibility decision.

Residency and the prescriber’s role

The program requires permanent Texas residency and a qualified physician’s determination about risk and potential benefit. A diagnosis alone does not establish that a particular formulation or dosage is appropriate. Use the official physician search, then discuss your situation with the clinician.

TCL does not evaluate symptoms, recommend dosages, collect medical records or sell certification. Do not submit patient information through directory advertising or listing-correction forms.

What changed after older guides were written?

HB 46 · 89R · Enacted · effective 2025-09-01. Expanded the Compassionate Use Program, including eligibility and the dispensing-organization framework. Official history.

Older state overview pages can retain narrower condition lists. This guide’s condition summary follows the DPS patient FAQ reviewed October 21, 2026, with the enacted bill linked for comparison. Review dates describe an editorial source check, not a medical review or a guarantee that agency pages update simultaneously.

Your next step

Follow the access process for physician search, CURT and fulfillment. Read the card/enrollment explanation before paying for a service based on a supposed state patient-registration requirement. Use medical dispensing sources rather than a hemp-store registration to establish the correct business category.
